As an HCI researcher, I’m passionate about the malleability of human perception. This piece explores the gap between objective clock time and subjective, perceived time. The slow flourishing of a flower can feel like an eternity in anticipation; the slit-scan algorithm makes this temporal distortion visible. This is a direct metaphor for my research in Virtual Reality, where we can manipulate a user’s sensory data to intentionally dilate or contract their experience of time, demonstrating that our perception is a construct we can actively shape.

mathematics in Turkish culture

In Turkish culture, the ancient art of carpet weaving is a profound example of algorithmic art. Each hand-woven carpet is a pixel-based system, a grid of colored knots arranged according to a strict set of rules. These rules, forming a pattern or ‘karton’, are essentially a program. The weaver acts as a human processor, executing this program knot by knot. The intricate geometric motifs themselves embody mathematical principles like symmetry, recursion, and tessellation, making every carpet a tangible artifact born from an abstract, executable algorithm.
