This artwork explores the relationship between my research in Advanced Complex Analysis (Geometric Function Theory), Special Functions, and Fractional Calculus, intertwined with my cultural background. The fabric design is inspired by traditional Hausa patterns from Northern Nigeria, symbolizing the interconnectedness of culture and knowledge. At the center is a fractal clock, representing the cyclical nature of time and the journey of learning. The clock hands are set to 3:14, representing the mathematical constant π (pi), a symbol of the infinite possibilities that mathematics offers.

mathematics in Nigerian culture

In Nigeria, mathematics is embedded in cultural expressions, especially in architecture and textiles. In Gwoza Local Government of Borno State, where I am from, traditional mud houses, or “Hȧgga Kurra” (Lamun language), exemplify geometric principles with their circular designs and symmetrical patterns. These structures reflect spatial organization and stability. Additionally, the vibrant textiles of Northern Nigeria feature complex patterns that embody mathematical concepts like symmetry and repetition, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and the role of mathematics in everyday life.
