What fascinates me about metabolism is that living systems are not defined by a single state but by a multitude of possibilities. Every biological system exists within a space of potential behaviors, and constraints gradually shape which futures remain available. In this artwork, the fragmented network on the left represents possibility, while the single path on the right represents determination. The Mexican-inspired geometric motifs connect scientific abstraction with cultural identity and transformation.

mathematics in Mexican culture

The geometric mosaics of Mitla, built by the Zapotec civilization in Oaxaca, are among the most mathematical artistic expressions of Mexico. Their designs are constructed from modular patterns that repeat, transform, and connect to create larger structures. When I study metabolic networks, I also work with systems built from simple interconnected units that generate complex behaviors. The grecas of Mitla therefore provide a natural bridge between Mexican cultural heritage and the mathematical language of networks and systems.
