Pérola Entre Linhas

audio commentary

How can one reconstruct a picture if almost all pixels were deleted? Perhaps by recoloring each pixel like its nearest remaining pixel. This space partition is called the “Voronoi diagram.” The artwork depicts Pérola (“Pearl”), a cat “between diagram lines” and also “between the lines.” Voronoi diagrams, though abstract, are commonly used to exemplify computational geometry data structures—this intersection of mathematics and computer science resembles the author’s academic journey.

Mathematics in Brazilian Culture

One of the world’s most famous architects is Oscar Niemeyer, a Brazilian known for his innovative work with concrete. Buildings with lush lines and curves are his mark. Niemeyer participated in important projects, such as the design of Brasília, the new capital of Brazil (1960), and several of its main civil buildings. He also collaborated on the project of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Even the university building where the author studied in Brazil was designed by him.
